Abandoned UAZ Ambulances in Zugdidi

Behind the Zugdidi Referral Hospital (ზუგდიდის რეფერალური ჰოსპიტალი) in western Georgia, a row of old UAZ-452 ambulances, nicknamed “Bukhanka” or “loaf,” sits abandoned. These Soviet-era vehicles were known for their reliability and ability to handle rough roads and tough weather, making them essential for transporting patients from remote areas like Svaneti to the hospital.

After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, these ambulances became obsolete as spare parts grew scarce and newer vehicles replaced them. Instead of being scrapped, they were parked behind the hospital and left to deteriorate. Today, rust covers their once-practical frames, windows are broken, and vines creep through the interiors. The faded red crosses and Soviet lettering still visible on their sides hint at their past purpose as life-saving machines.

The ambulances are more than just old vehicles—they’re remnants of a time when practical solutions like these were key to rural healthcare. They also reflect the rapid changes following the Soviet collapse, which left many items abandoned.

The site is easy to find, right behind the hospital. While there’s no fence or gate, it’s hospital property, so visitors should explore respectfully.
